What does SEO cost in Sweden 2026?
Price levels per setup, four pricing models and a worked example showing when the work pays for itself.

Contents
SEO has no single price, because the work is sold in four different setups with completely different price tags. In Sweden, local SEO as a monthly service costs roughly 2 000–8 000 kr per month, comprehensive search engine optimisation 8 000–25 000 kr, and a standalone SEO audit 5 000–30 000 kr as a one-time purchase. The differences within each range rarely come down to quality and almost always to three things: competition in the niche, the technical state of the site and how much content has to be produced. Here is the full calculation, including the line items that usually sit outside the monthly fee.
SEO price levels per setup
| Setup | Market range in Sweden | With us | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local SEO, monthly | 2 000–8 000 kr/mo | 3 600 kr/mo | Businesses whose customers are within one geographic area |
| Comprehensive SEO, monthly | 8 000–25 000 kr/mo | from 10 000 kr/mo | National sales or a competitive niche |
| SEO audit, one-time | 5 000–30 000 kr | 6 000 kr | Sites that first want to know what is actually holding them back |
| Hourly rate, scoped tasks | Rarely published openly | 900 kr/hour | One-off fixes without a running contract |
The ranges above are market levels for small businesses, not for enterprise work where six-figure monthly budgets occur. Note also that most agencies publish no prices at all: you get a figure only after a sales meeting, which makes comparison hard before you are already inside a sales process.
Four pricing models and what they mean for you
- Fixed monthly fee. A set amount per month for a set scope of work. Easiest to budget and the most common model for small businesses. It requires that you see what was actually done each month, otherwise the price cannot be judged.
- One-time purchase, usually an audit. You pay once for a review and a prioritised action list, then decide yourself who carries out the fixes. The lowest-risk option when you are unsure whether the site is worth optimising at all.
- Hourly rate. Suits scoped assignments: a technical fix, a site structure, a pre-launch review. It becomes expensive as a running solution, because SEO requires many small efforts over a long time.
- Performance based, payment per ranking. Sounds risk-free but rarely is: the model rewards keywords that are easy to rank for rather than keywords that bring customers. Always ask which keywords the guarantee covers, what volume they have and what happens when Google changes.
What drives the sum?
- Competition in the niche. Law and e-commerce in the big cities require months of work where a tradesman in a smaller town can reach the top 3 in a few weeks.
- The technical state of the site. A slow site with indexing problems has to be fixed before content work pays off, and that repair is usually a one-time cost.
- Geography. Local visibility in one municipality is considerably cheaper than national visibility, because competition is lower and the work happens mainly in the Google Business profile and the directories.
- Content volume. Every service that should rank needs its own page. Ten pages to be written is a different budget than three.
- The link budget. Links are bought or earned and normally sit outside the fee. Always ask to see it as a separate line, so you know what is agency work and what is an external cost.
Worked example: when does the SEO fee pay off?
Work backwards from what a customer is worth to you, and calculate on contribution margin rather than revenue. The example assumes an SEO cost of 10 000 kr per month.
| Contribution margin per customer | New customers per month to break even | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| 5 000 kr | 2 | Requires steady enquiry volume, suits services with repeat purchases |
| 15 000 kr | 0.7 | Two customers in three months cover the cost |
| 50 000 kr | 0.2 | One customer every fifth month, typical for B2B with long contracts |
Two caveats. The first is time: the first measurable movements normally arrive after 4–6 weeks and the business effect after 3–6 months, so the calculation should be run over at least half a year. The second is that organic traffic does not stop when the invoices do. A page that has climbed keeps delivering visits with no cost per click, which is the decisive difference from advertising.
What an SEO price includes, and what is added
- Normally included: keyword work, technical optimisation, work on existing pages, internal linking, reporting and review meetings.
- Often added: link budget, new copy beyond a certain number of pages, photography and graphics, plus development time if the site needs rebuilding.
- Costs nothing: Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and the Google Business profile. Paid tools are the agency's cost, not yours.
- VAT is added to Swedish agency fees, so always compare prices excluding VAT against each other.
Cheap SEO: what do you get for 2 000 kr a month?
Roughly two to three working hours. That is enough to manage a Google Business profile, keep reviews in order and make small text adjustments, which is precisely what local SEO is about. It is not enough for technical optimisation, new content production and link work at the same time. The problem with cheap packages is therefore rarely the price itself, but that they are sold as comprehensive SEO. If you are offered comprehensive work for 2 000 kr a month, ask how many hours that equals and what is concretely going to fit into them.
Five lines to demand in a quote: which keywords the work covers, how many hours per month the fee equals, whether the link budget is included or added, who owns the copy and the accounts if the collaboration ends, and how long the notice period is.

Common questions about what SEO costs
Is SEO free?
Clicks from Google's organic results are free, but the work that gets you there is not. Doing it yourself mainly costs time: Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and the Google Business profile are free, and the basics can be learned. What usually costs money is technical optimisation, new copy and links, because they require either many hours of your own or someone who does it for you. What you can do on your own is covered in What is SEO?
How much should a small business spend on SEO?
Work from what a new customer is worth to you, not from what a competitor pays. A business with local customers often manages with local SEO in the lower part of the market range, while one selling nationwide or in a competitive niche needs a budget for content and links every month. If you are unsure, a one-time audit is the cheapest way to find out what level the site actually requires before you commit a monthly budget.
How much does link building cost?
Links are a separate budget item and normally sit outside the monthly fee. The price per link varies heavily with the site's authority and relevance, and cheap link packages from networks are the most common reason a site gets problems instead of positions. Our model is that every link is reviewed manually and that the link budget is reported separately, so you see what is work and what is an external cost.
Why do so few agencies publish their SEO prices?
Mainly because the scope varies a lot between clients, and a published price becomes a promise that is hard to keep in a competitive niche. Another reason is the sales process: a meeting lets the agency set the price according to what the client seems willing to pay. As a buyer, compare the quotes line by line using the list above.
Is search engine optimisation more expensive than advertising?
Per month they can cost about the same, but the curves look different. Ads cost per click and stop delivering the day the budget is switched off, while search engine optimisation costs work up front and keeps producing traffic afterwards. Over a couple of years SEO can therefore become cheaper per visit if the pages climb, while ads bring customers faster. What the advertising side costs in numbers is worked through in What does Google Ads cost in Sweden?
